Building Virtue through Film

Dave ShaverDo your films demonstrate Godly virtue? Do you want them to? The incredible effort of film making is wasted if it does not show God's virtues in one way or another.

2 Peter chapter 1 describes the progression of Godly virtue.

Let's start in verse 3:

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

God has given each of us the all the things that give us life and godliness... knowledge of Him. What are we doing with this knowledge? Are we sharing it? Jesus gave us the great commission that we might teach others about the life that this world is so quick to throw away.

Additionally, if we are also called to glory and honor, how are we to act and relate with others if we are to share this knowledge. Are you being virtuous in your work? Are you bringing glory to God in your films?

Continuing in verse 4:

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

We have indeed been given a precious promise: life and life abundantly. Through this life we are free from the junk that Hollywood and the film industry wants to shove down everyone's throats

Movies and advertisements flow with lustful images and sounds. As part of our calling, we are to separate ourselves not only from this junk, but we must make sure that our films do not promote it either.

Verses 5-7:

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly love.

From this foundational promise, we can build our faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, and love. How much more potent will we be in our films and on set than if we demonstrate each of these attributes in everything we do?

How would your script change if your main character demonstrated these things? People tend emulate what they see on film, if not by action, at least by principle. Wouldn't it be amazing to have people leave your film repeating a line that honored God?

Verses 8,9:

For if these things be in you, and abound, they make it so that you will neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

Let us not walk in forgetfulness of the joy that God has given us through Christ. Let us make films that are appealing, yet honor God. Let's demonstrate the fruitfulness of the abundant life that we live in each day and yet see people walking blindly about searching for, because they are the reason we should be in film making. They are the reason God sent His Son.

God bless your films!
